Previously we’ve seen having no regular lifestyle pattern leads to weight gain.  if you don’t have any routine, then you tend to binge.  But now we’ve got some evidence that even young women need to watch not what they eat but how much they sleep.

Researchers tracked young women in Utah for seven days of sleep, and then correlated those results to how much they weighed.  Women who slept less than 6.5 or more than 8.5 hours in a night were more likely to be obese.  The addition of physical activity also factored in, but sleep routine alone was a significant factor in how much a woman weighs.

It would be a bizarre outcome if in twenty years we came to the conclusion that the obesity epidemic had nothing to do with food at all.  It was all a sleep deficiency, that threw off our hormones for holding and gaining weight.

As we come into the cold and flu season, let’s also remember that an 8% variation in sleep schedule can make you much more susceptible to infection.  Sleep, it does a body good.
