In trying to prove that we should all diet, researchers found that those who indulged in their later years did not show any real negative health effects.
My own take on the study was, huh? A five-year telephone survey of seniors in rural Pennsylvania. What are the chances that some of these seniors just told researchers what they wanted to hear, while others were more honest? I don’t know, but it just seems like an odd outcome that basically says it doesn’t matter what you eat after 76. Researchers went the other way and said people should eat more.
There is some truth to the idea that too-thin individuals are not healthier, because they have no fat reserves during a chronic pneumonia or other illness. But to tell our obese elderly not to worry about it just seems like a bad idea.
