Drug-resistant malaria spreading faster and wider – The Times of India

Drug-resistant malaria spreading faster and wider – The Times of India.

The drug of choice has contined to be switched.  But the real story is that we simply cannot keep up with malarial mutation.  All efforts to wipe out malaria have simply failed.  As mosquitoes spread, so does the illness.

The drug of choice in this case is artemesinin, a drug form of Artemesia annua.  It is a wonderful use of a traditional Chinese medicine herb, but we should stop trying to use single agents against malaria.  Let’s hope the researchers begin to work with three or five traditional medications simultaneously, to outpace the mutation rate.
