Just Got That Burnin’ Feeling: The Skinny on Sunburn Treatment.

Spotted forms of Aloe vera are sometimes known...

Here in Maine it is pretty darn hard to get a sunburn, but we can manage it from time to time.  The old wives’ tales about aloe vera gel turn out to be true.  It really does significantly help with sunburns.

If you have the aloe vera gel you’ve purchased, make sure it has as few additives as possible.  Burned skin is already inflamed, and is more likely to be responsive to any topical allergens.  For those of you using the live plant (which you can buy by the leaf in several grocery stores these days), make sure to gently use only the gel.  The skin of the plant has irritating properties, so getting the last half ounce of gel off the inside of the skin may undo all that came before.

For those of you who want to see the data on aloe vera (and some interesting information on internal effects) here’s my answer with data on Quora.
