Paralysed rats taught to walk again – PubMed Health.

I am always disturbed by animal experiments, but I don’t have an answer to them.  In this particular study paralysed rats were stimulated, injected with nerve growing drugs, and placed in a robotic harness that held them upright.  Over time, they were able to move with the support of the harness.  The harness held them up, and their legs responded to the sensations of a moving floor.

While everyone is very cautious about the results, what it does point to is the need for extremely aggressive rehabilitation of our accident victims.  Rather than assuming anything is set in stone, we should consider the nervous system plastic, flexible and adapting.
